A Complete Guide to Preparing for Your Boudoir Session
You’ve finally booked your session! You have thought about this for months or even years. You have all of the butterflies, excitement and expectation of how the images will turn out. BUT…now comes the time when you have to actually prepare for something like this!! How do I prepare myself for a boudoir session?! You start to stress. Where do I start? Where do I buy outfits? Should I tan? Should I work out?
I’ve got you… Let’s take it from the top.
If you are a planner, I want you to go onto Pinterest and just start to look at ideas. Outfits, women with similar body types, posing, lighting, anything that you are drawn to. This isn’t for you to expect your photographer to copy a certain aesthetic, but for you to learn what your vision is. This is further help you and your boudoir photographer to be on the same page as far as your goals for your session. If you are not a planner and want your boudoir photographer to just create their vision, that is 100% ok too!! It’s all about preference and what makes you feel less stressed.
If you are not diving into the Client Closet, then I recommend going out and trying on different pieces of lingerie (or whatever outfit you’ve chosen that best showcases your personality.) The sooner the better. That way you KNOW the outfit choice fits you appropriately and comfortably. If you aren't comfortable in the outfit it will show on camera.
You can workout and exercise per your usual schedule but don’t wear yourself down trying to change your body. The entire purpose is to showcase you as you are. Your boudoir photographer will explain different posing and lighting that will flatter your body type best. Just trust the process!! Also, if you injure yourself prior to, then that puts a damper on the entire session and you won’t be at the top of your game!!
Stretch in the weeks and days leading up to your session. This will help maximize the ability of your movement and body. Please note that if you have limitations of any kind, to consult your physician to make sure you do not cause any pain, further injury to your body. Boudoir can be a workout, so plan to be a wee bit sore in your muscles afterwards. Your boudoir photographer can modify posing should you have any physical limitations while still showcasing you in your best light!
I would not recommend self-tanning or spray tans unless you’ve located someone that you trust and you’ve been doing this for a long time. Often times, self tanner or spray tans will show up very concentrated and orange on camera. They do not look natural. If not done properly, then you will have streaks on your hands and other various places. Tread lightly and proceed with caution.
HYDRATE. HYDRATE. HYDRATE. We all know that water is amazing for us. There are so many benefits of drinking plenty of water in the weeks and days leading up to your session. This will give your skin and hair a nice glow. Water will properly allow your body to shine, bend and move at its highest level. Also, moisturizer is important for your face and body to further level up your skin game!! A great face moisturizer will be of benefit to our makeup artist and maximize the results of your makeup application. P.S, Who doesn’t love to feel smooth, shiny and hydrated. It will make you feel even better going into your session.
